I set up for this painting in a side path at Fort Harrison. Â While I was painting, rain was threatening. Â After I got the first block in of the painting complete, I took a break to look at my weather app on my phone and saw that there was a large storm moving through Indianapolis.
I was fascinated with the layers in the reflection. There are the trees, the shadows from the trees, the sky, and the brown water of the lake. They fought for my attention, and they each had their own moment of beauty.

I looked at the lake and was caught by the how the reflections drew my eye up to the tangle of branches.

I sat in my car and looked out at a small lake and the reflections that were on it. Â The branch that sticks out of the water drew my attention, but the negative space is what made the design work for me.

A dreary, December day at a lake near my inlaws…

I like the way the vista opened up and drew my eyes towards the distance. The trees run contour along the mountains and the subtle shadows of blue on the snow echo in the grayer bluer distant mountains.

What to do when you are in your car and don’t want to disturb someone’s nap? Â Pull over and paint. Â Here is a study I did on a beautiful sunny day. Â I would have liked to be outside when I did it, but there wasn’t any shade nearby and it was a very windy day. Â So I painted it in the front seat of the car.
We hiked up a small mountain and I painted this vista from the top. Â I was attracted to this interesting, wind blown tree and the patterns of green, blue and brown in the valley below.

I love to watch the light shine through trees, and I was drawn to the glow reflected underneath this tree. Â This was the second painting of the morning.
