These trees had a cliff behind them.  The sun was coming from behind the  cliff and casting light through the trees but the cliff behind them was in darkness.

Just off the parking lot at a park. Â The gold in the tree contrasted with the mountains behind and the way the path drew me into the scene.
A few red trees in late autumn splendor at a park. Â The red against the blue distant hills was a beautiful color combination on this wonderful fall day.

There was a touch of red in the tree, on this hot day in early fall.

There was a light fog in the air and it was beautiful to look towards the sun. Â I pulled over in a park and painted this scene from my car.
This is one that was started on location and finished in the studio. Â It was the week after the time change last autumn and I did not realize how quick it was going to get dark. Â I thought I would have more time before my light disappeared.
In the morning, I started this painting in plein air. Â I had to stop before it was complete in order to pick up my campsite and make it out before checkout time. Â I later finished this painting in the studio.

Have you ever walked outside in the fall and looked up at golden leaves that glowed as the sun shone through them?  Has the similarity of these natural foliage and stained glass ever struck you?  Butterflies wings can have the same effect on light when the creatures fly in-between you and the light source.  These natural sources, leaves and wings, do not color the light and create a pattern on the floor, but they do seem to glow, suspended in the sky.
