I was fascinated with the layers in the reflection. There are the trees, the shadows from the trees, the sky, and the brown water of the lake. They fought for my attention, and they each had their own moment of beauty.

The layers in the composition interested me. I was looking for a place to paint near the airport hotel and saw this scene through some evergreens from the hotel parking lot. The late afternoon light and contrasting golden and blue colors wished me a fond fairwell.

Initially I was interested in the layering of the foreground grass, trees, grass, field and far tree line. Â I also like the way the dreary colors of the cloudy day are echoed in the bare trees and on the empty field.

I like the way the vista opened up and drew my eyes towards the distance. The trees run contour along the mountains and the subtle shadows of blue on the snow echo in the grayer bluer distant mountains.

The curving path in the snow along the river is what drew me to this scene. Paths and roads make me want to walk into a picture. I painted this from the car with the window down so I could see the “true” colors of the landscape.

What to do when you are in your car and don’t want to disturb someone’s nap? Â Pull over and paint. Â Here is a study I did on a beautiful sunny day. Â I would have liked to be outside when I did it, but there wasn’t any shade nearby and it was a very windy day. Â So I painted it in the front seat of the car.
I walked up to the Duck Pond and set up my easel. Â I was interested in the patterns the trees made and the reflection in the water.

Here is a picture inside a car where I was painting one day. I usually like the window open at least part time so that I can see the colors better, but this day the snow was blowing sideways and so it wasn’t possible.
A car pulled in next to me and got stuck. I tried to help him push the car out, but I am small and I don’t think I was much...
The vastness of the scene and the distant mountains are what interested me in the scene. The late winter snow was starting to melt allowing golden foliage and green sage to contrast with remaining snow.

There is a place to pull over and rest at the border between the states. Â I pulled over and painted this small painting on my way to visit my family. Â The rich colors of autumn on this cool sunny day filled my senses.
