It started to rain just as we were setting up our easels and we were able to seek shelter in a covered picnic area. My water soluable oil paints are not friends with the rain, so I was glad for the shelter.

In the early morning I drove to this state park and saw this scene near the boat dock. It was the middle of May I went early to the park to paint in the early light and to paint before the park was filled with children enjoying May field trips!

I drove to the park as the sun was rising and painted this green winter scene.
I came back to the same tree as I painted in April Showers 2016 and painted the same scene in the sun. I have had art students who can do the same scene multiple times learning more and more about the same scene every time. I also have had students that when faced with the same thing a second time had no more to say and had a hard time repeating it.
The weather threatened rain and the yellow popped, but didn’t glow.

I touched this one up later in the studio.
It was a beautiful morning and I was fascinated by this old tree. It is the kind of tree that I usually shy away from painting in that it looks “unreal.” But on this particular morning, I decided to go for it.
While I was painting, I was thinking about punch on value and adding a touch of texture with my palette knife.

Here is a quick painting I did on a Friday morning. I was thinking about having more contrast in my paintings and working with the pallette knife in the foreground to add some light texture. The scene is calm and quiet – the moment before something happens.

This was my first experience at a quick draw during a paint out. It wasn’t extremely short, we had an hour and 15 minutes to complete the painting.
I did choose a small 6 by 8 size and next time I will probably choose a larger size, but I wanted a size I was comfortable with. I liked the layers of the blue flowers in front of the field in front of the row of trees in the background. There w...
