Lake Michigan was calm and reflected the sky like glass on the morning this sketch was painted.

Another study of the water and how the evening light reflects and shines through the waves.

I found a small shelter to paint under during the rain. Â There weather was rainy and cloudy for the most part while we were in Michigan and I had scouted out this spot so that I’d know where to go on a rainy morning. Â Mornings previous to this I found myself looking for places to paint from the back of my car when it was raining.

From a higher perspective, I experimented with larger dunes in this mid day sketch.
It was a little chilly and my little one was complaining a lot near the end as I rushed to finish!
While my husband went for a walk, I painted this painting just before sunset.
After the painting of the field that I posted last Thursday, I had a little time left before I had to be back, so I drove along and saw this white boat fading in and out of the fog on an interior lake. It caught my eye and I decided to do a quick small 8″ by 6″ oil sketch of it. Â It was still raining so I sat in the back of our highlander with the back open.
I was searching for a place to pull over and paint on a foggy rainy morning and found this small park.  It’s not a beach scene, but the fog was so thick that you couldn’t see much on the beach.  I was able to sit in the back of my highlander and paint this out of the rain.

After dinner I went out and painted this little 6″ by 8″ view of the sand and water. Â I was fascinated with the way that the light shone through the water and gave a glow to the waves.

The painting below was done completely in plein air, but I had to use my memory and an image I took from my phone to finish it. Â Half way through the painting, there was a dramatic weather change and this stormy scene that you see in front of you became a sunny, peaceful day.

While in Michigan this past June, I was able to average 3 paintings a day with a total of 26 paintings in 8 and a half days. Â For me this was a breath of fresh air after a wonderful but hard year. Â My wonderful husband was generous enough to take over during the morning before he had to work and to free me up again in the evening after dinner. Â This is the third painting of the trip on Saturday evening right before sunset. Â It was my first of many 6″ by 8″ landscape studies.
