Washed Out to Sea

I do not get to visit the ocean very often, due to living in the midwest.  I thought that a tide would come in slowly and that their would be warning waves that might hit my feet while I painted standing on a large rock.  I thought wrong.  There was no warning for this wave that washed over me and my painting gear.  My husband was nice enough to see the wave coming and take a picture rather than warn me.

Cloudy Morning with Emily

I invited my cousin’s wife to come paint with me one morning over 4th of July weekend and she said- “Yes!”  It was fun to introduce her to painting plein air and to have a buddy at sunrise in the park.  We set up near this bridge.  It was a gloomy morning and I was waiting and hoping the whole time that the sun would shine through and illuminate the scene.

Shaker Village Mid Day Oil Sketch

I passed by this scene and then later came back to it.  I know that once I see something that grabs me, I should stop and paint, but I continually walk past the scene and think I will find something better or just as good further on, or in a more convenient location.  Inevitably, I just waist time until I get back to that magical point and paint the beauty that I found.
