For some reason I was getting short of breath on this hike, so I stopped to paint while my husband hiked further on. Â I was interested in the light that shone over the hills and through the trees.

On my second morning at this lake, I decided to face the other direction and paint the light falling on the mountain. Â It was a chilly morning and I was bundled up in hat, gloves, and coat.

It was a beautiful evening and there were many cars and people in the area. Â My sister Katie and I drove along the Pedro valley until we found this spot to pull over and climb down to the river, where I set up to paint. Â The sun set over the far hill sooner then I expected, but I was able to finish my sketch.

We hiked up Mt. Baker to a plateau with a vista of Mt. Hood. I was able to prop my art box on a fallen log. I was fascinated by the size of the vertical drop in front of me. On the hike down the sun was at the right angle to make the forest seem magical. The trees had a beautiful glow that you could feel in the air.

After hiking a mile and a half to Mirror Lake, I sat down on a log and balanced my box on the log in front of me to complete this quick study of the mountain and reflection. Â It can be tricky when you are hoping that your art box doesn’t fall into the mud of the bank or in the lake, but it adds to the experience of painting outdoors.

When I was setting up for this plein air painting the head of my tripod broke and I spent the rest of this trip balancing my paint box on trees and rocks close to the ground.
