Another December winter painting along a deserted Kentucky country road.
Another December winter painting along a deserted Kentucky country road.
This is the other painting from my trip to the missed lake. This was a plein air start that I finished in the studio and used my on site notes and value study, other location painting, and a photo reference.

Off of a small country road, down a one lane dirt road was this tree and fence. A quiet place to sit and paint.

Fields on a quiet road in the country.
The tree line in the distance was what drew me to this scene.
Every place and every season has it’s color scheme and the colors of a Kentucky winter can be surprisingly enchanting with golds and oranges set against greys and greens.

There was an old log cabin in a city park. Â Although the day was grey, the yellows in the landscaped popped.
December in Kentucky can be dreary, but the color scheme in the country is beautiful and I was loving the orange pop in the scene and the way these two trees in the foreground interacted with one another.
Initially I was interested in the layering of the foreground grass, trees, grass, field and far tree line. Â I also like the way the dreary colors of the cloudy day are echoed in the bare trees and on the empty field.

On a cloudy morning, at sunrise, I got away from my family for a couple of hours to paint. Â I drove to Highbridge Park and looked into the ravine. Â I had to stay close to my car because of the threat of rain.
