I like the angle of the bridge in the composition and the play of the bright snow to the trees. The light was very bland on this day and it forced me to look at shape, color and composition to come up with a scene. It was peaceful.
Fences provide directional lines and a foreground. This was a beautiful morning and I pulled into the park right after the truck with the plow had paved a way to get in. The snow was deep, fresh and coated the landscape.
This was a particularly hard day for me to find a painting in the landscape. The lighting was very even, however, I took the challenge and was fairly happy with at least three of the four paintings of the day. Here is a quiet scene of the bottom of a tree in the snow.
At the edge of a city looking out at nature and the remnants of Winter snow. I was interested in the expanse and the open feeling of the scene.
Another solitary road in a peaceful place with winter colors around me.
A day or two after “Before the Snow” I went out and painted the scene after the snow. It was a warm day for snow and I enjoyed the clouds in the distance while my foreground was in sunshine.
An old building hidden behind bushes and trees on a deserted road. A quiet and peaceful place on a cloudy winter day.
Another December winter painting along a deserted Kentucky country road.
This is the other painting from my trip to the missed lake. This was a plein air start that I finished in the studio and used my on site notes and value study, other location painting, and a photo reference.
