It was a dreary morning but this tree fascinated me.

The sun came out for this painting last May at the lake. I was interested in the subtle background mountains contrasting with the foreground tree.
This was a particularly hard day for me to find a painting in the landscape. The lighting was very even, however, I took the challenge and was fairly happy with at least three of the four paintings of the day. Here is a quiet scene of the bottom of a tree in the snow.
An old building hidden behind bushes and trees on a deserted road. A quiet and peaceful place on a cloudy winter day.
This is the other painting from my trip to the missed lake. This was a plein air start that I finished in the studio and used my on site notes and value study, other location painting, and a photo reference.

Every place and every season has it’s color scheme and the colors of a Kentucky winter can be surprisingly enchanting with golds and oranges set against greys and greens.

I was following directions on google maps through my phone. My destination was a lake. I was unfamiliar with the area, so it wasn’t until I had reached my destination that I realized I was several miles off course at an old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. However, as an artist, the middle of nowhere is sometimes a good place to be, so I got out my paint box.

These trees had a cliff behind them. The sun was coming from behind the cliff and casting light through the trees but the cliff behind them was in darkness.
Just off the parking lot at a park. The gold in the tree contrasted with the mountains behind and the way the path drew me into the scene.
A few red trees in late autumn splendor at a park. The red against the blue distant hills was a beautiful color combination on this wonderful fall day.
